False-colour scanning electron micrograph of a TM 2716 integrated circuit, or silicon chip, show- ing 2 connecting wires bonded to terminal pads on the edge of the device. The wires are attached by ultrasonic welding. Between the pads, 2 narrow tracks lead towards the chip's circuitry at bottom right. The small squares at the right-hand end of the tracks are transistors controlling the inputs from & outputs to the connecting wires. This chip is of the EPROM (Electrically Programmable Read- Only Memory) type which is programmed by applying a voltage across selected connecting pins. Some EPROMS can later be reprogrammed. Magnification: x70 at 35mm size, x120 at 4.5x6cm size. Full false-colour. BW is T370 451.
