Caption: Microelectronic circuit. Light micrograph showing part of a mixer circuit on a microwave receiver chip. The mixer is a device for converting radio frequencies (including microwaves) to a higher frequency. The microwave frequency signal, with data encoded by amplitude modulation (AM), is mixed in this circuit with a locally-generated high frequency signal. The intermediate frequency (IF) signal that results is easier to amplify and to filter against interference, but still has the original AM signal encoded. This sort of device is seen in superheterodyne receivers, the most common type. Interference contrast illumination; magnification: x12 at 6x7cm & x10 at 5x7cm size.
