Microprocessor. A special effect photograph of the underside of a packaged microprocessor chip in falling motion. The bright square in the centre of the microprocessor is the silicon chip or integrated circuit (IC). The IC is mounted on a pink substrate. Around the IC are a series of pink vertical pins. These are the termination pins which connect the microprocessor to the rest of the computer. Thin wires (usually gold wires) connect the chip to the termination pins. Often the chip is encapsulated in resin to protect it from heat. The microprocessor is used as the main control unit in a personal computer.
