Caption: Conker in its shell. This is the fruit of the common horse chestnut tree (Aesculus hippocastanum). Its soft spiny shell protects the seeds against predation. Inside are the hard brown nuts (conkers). In the UK, conkers are used in a children's game. The conkers are hung from a piece of string and competitors take it in turns to attack their opponent's conker with their own until one or other is destroyed.
