Caption: Microchip surface. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a few of the many tracks that are etched on the surface of a microchip. It is the closeness and precision engineering of these tracks that allow complex data-processing circuits to fit on a microchip. The tracks are formed by various deposition and etching techniques. Such microchips (or integrated circuits) can be used in computers as the central processing unit (CPU). This is the surface of a Cyrix computer microchip. Magnification: x910 when printed 10cm wide.
