Caption: Microchip connection wires. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of gold connecting wires (across top) on an integrated circuit (microchip). This integrated circuit is a light sensor known as a CCD (charge-coupled device). CCDs are used in digital cameras and telescopes to record images. Light falling on the sensor is converted into an electrical signal which is transmitted along wires like these. The image information is then stored and can be used to recreate the picture on a screen or other display. Magnification: x13 when printed 10cm wide.
