This image is part of the sequence Technology: Clothed technicians in a clean room used for computer chip (microchip) production

Caption: Chip manufacture. Robotic machinery used in the manufacture of computer chips. The robot passes silicon wafers on trays through different solu- tions; robots are used to ensure that the process is repeated in exactly the same way each time. The chips are made by placing a solution called photoresist on its surface. A pattern of light is then shone onto the wafer, making exposed areas of photoresist solidify. The remaining photoresist fluid is then washed off. The wafers are then exposed to acid which eats away areas not coated in photoresist. Electrical contacts can then be placed in these eroded areas. Photographed at an Intel factory.
