This image is part of the sequence Technology: Clothed technicians in a clean room used for chip (microchip) and wafer production

Credit: ROSENFELD IMAGES LTD/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY

Caption: Micro-chip technicians. Technicians from the microchip manufacturing industry dressed in clean-room clothing. They are wearing protective suits and face masks to prevent hair, skin flakes and clothing fibres from contaminating the production facilities. Exposed semiconductor chips are vulnerable to airborne dust and can be disabled by the slightest contamination. The air in the clean room is filtered to remove dust particles; its temperature and humidity are also strictly regulated to prevent damage to the chips. Photographed at a Siemens factory in Germany.
