A technique that is commonly used to determine the composition of a semiconductor material is Auger Electron Spectroscopy (AES). This uses an electron beam to probe the surface and determine its composition by the energy of the secondary electrons emitted from the surface probed by the primary beam. Computer technology, and many other electronic components, are based on semiconductor technology.
