Caption: Molecular semiconductor research. Technician examining thin films of molecular semiconductors grown by organic molecular beam deposition (OMBD). This is a technique in which functional semiconductors are arranged on a surface by firing molecules onto it. Many electronic components that are traditionally made using inorganic materials, such as silicon, can also be made using large organic molecules, such as phthalocyanines. Components that can be made in this way include diodes, transistors and even complete integrated circuits. Photographed in Italy.
