Caption: Cybernetic circuitry. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a neuron (nerve cell, orange) on a silicon chip. The neuron is immobilised between polyimide pillars. The cell was cultured on the circuit until it formed a net- work with nearby neurons (for example, far left). Under each cell is a transistor, which can excite the neuron above it. The neuron then passes a sig- nal to the neurons attached to it, which activates the transistors beneath them. This experiment shows that hybrid neuron-silicon circuits are feasible. Work done at the Max Planck Institute, Germany. Magnification: x500 at 6x7cm size.
