Caption: Cybernetics research. Pond snail (Lymnaea stagnalis) on a silicon wafer. Nerve cells (neurons) from this snail have been used to form a neurochip, in which neurons and conventional silicon devices communicate with one another. Under each cell is a transistor, which can excite the neuron above it. The neuron then passes a signal to the neurons attached to it, which in turn activates the transistors beneath them. This experiment shows that hybrid neuron- silicon circuits are feasible. Work done at the Max Planck Institute in Germany.
