Caption: Micromechanic motor. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of the core of a micromotor. Sitting on the core of the motor is a skeleton of a plankton, Radiolaria sp., for scale. This motor was made using similar techniques to those employed in integrated circuit (silicon chip) manufacture. At these small scales, silicon is as good a material as steel for mechanical systems, but is far easier to shape. Magnification x60 at 6x7cm size.
