Micromotor. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of the drive gear (orange) in a micromotor. This gear is smaller in diameter than a human hair and 100 times thinner than a sheet of paper. Driven by two microengines (not visible), it turns a larger gear (green, lower right) through one revolution per second. The whole device was etched into the surface of a wafer of silicon by the same techniques used to make silicon chips. Micromotors could one day be used in a range of exotic "nanotechnology" applications, such as microscopic electric drug pumps implanted in the human body. Magnification: x660 at 5x7cm size.
