Caption: Flap. Scanning electron micrograph of micromechanical flaps which can be pivoted up to disrupt airflow over a surface. The flaps have been fabricated from a silicon wafer using the same techniques used to make silicon chips. A possible use for these flaps is in aircraft where they could replace the large flaps used for steering. Magnification: x410 at 6x7cm size. Magnification: x625 at 10x12cm size.
