Caption: Micromechanic accelerometer. Coloured scanning electron micrograph of interlocking 'teeth' in a micro-mechanical accelerometer. The 'teeth' are able to move relative to one another & contain inductors, devices which generate an electric current in response to a change in an magnetic field. During a high acceleration or deceleration, the 'teeth' move towards each other, causing a change in the magnetic field. The signal from the inductors is then amplified to activate another system, such as an air-bag in a car. This device has been manufactured, using the same techniques used to make silicon chips, at Cornell University, USA. Magnification: x420 at 5x7cm size. magnification: x675 at 10x12cm size.
