Caption: Photonic crystal waveguide. Computer representa- tion of light being bent through a right angle in a photonic crystal. The colours show the light wave in the crystal. The white circles show the structure of the photonic crystal. The structure prohibits the propagation of a specific frequency of light. If a defect is made in the crystal, such as the path seen here, light of such a frequency has no option but to follow it. Photonic crystal waveguides can bend light in a far shorter distance than conventional optical fibres. This makes it possible to create much smaller optical components, which could lead to the creation of optical computers. Work done at MIT, USA.
