Caption: Nanomuscle motor testing rig. Miniature motors held by Rod MacGregor, the head of NanoMuscle Inc., USA. The testing rig sets the motors to continually lift weights (bottom centre) until they stop functioning. The numbered displays show how many cycles each motor has performed. Nanomuscle motors measure just 7.6 centimetres in length. They utilise the "shape memory" property of nitinol, a nickel-titanium alloy, which can assume different shapes depending on the surrounding temperature. These temperatures can be of such a small range that an electric current from a battery is sufficient to cause an effect.
