Caption: Molecular differential gear, computer model. This gear design is an example of a possible future application of nanotechnology. Each of the coloured spheres represents a single atom. A differential gear transmits power to two shafts while allowing them to rotate at different speeds. Differential gears are used in motor vehicles. Nanotechnology involves the construction of devices at the molecular level. Constructing this gear would be beyond the current level of nanotechnology. Designed by K. Eric Drexler of the Institute for Molecular Manufacturing, California, USA.
