Caption: Gold nanoparticles, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Nanoparticles of this elemental metal are produced by precipitating it in a liquid to produce what is known as colloidal gold, or nanogold. Applications of nanogold include using it to detect and trap biological toxins. It is also used in cancer treatment research and in various technology applications. It has been used for centuries to colour glass. Magnification: x215,000 when printed at 10 centimetres tall.
