Fragment of the 8K (8 kilobyte) work fixed store from an ICl/Ferranti Atlas 1 computer (1963), showing the rectangular "hairbrush" units, consisting of rows of copper & carbon rods that are plugged-in to the underlying copper mesh. Inividual "hairbrush" units are seen at top right. In computing a word is considered as an entity of bits, bytes or characters that is capable of being stored in one location in the computer's memory.
