Caption: Early computer. Technician at the console of an IBM 360/195 computer from 1971. This console gave information on the operation of the machine. It gave a summary of how the computer was performing and what types of jobs it was running; it also helped diagnose faults when the machine broke down. The computer processed 10-15 million instructions a second (MIPs) and had a storage memory of 2 megabytes. The computer was installed at the Atlas Computer Laboratory (part of the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory), Britain, at a cost of #2.5 million (1971 price). It was mainly used for particle physics research.
