Caption: Wearable computing. Pair of prototype stress- detecting shoes, a type of affective computer. The shoes measure the amount of electricity the skin of the foot conducts using a small voltage applied between two electrodes. When the wearer is frightened or anxious, the skin's conductivity will rise as the sweat glands produce more sweat. Affective computers provide feedback about a person's physical state or behaviour, such as indicating if their wearer's stress levels are too high. These shoes were created at the Media Lab of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), USA.
