The Cray-2, installed in 1985, has a memory capacity of 2 billion bytes and a top speed of 1.2 billion flops (floating point or arithmetical operations per second). Some 240,000 computer chips are packed into the C-shaped cabinet. A liquid coolant must wash continuously over the circuits to dissipate heat that would otherwise melt the machine.
