Caption: Electronics design. Engineer uses a computer-aided design (CAD) package to analyse the temperature distribution in electronic telecommunications equipment. The equipment's temperature is colour-coded from purple (coolest), through blue green, yellow and orange, to red (hottest). Heat sources which are not adequately cooled can lead to localised "hot spots" that damage equipment. CAD is valuable in electronics design, as it allows rapid changes to be made to the design, and can make rapid calculations of the subsequent effects.
