Caption: Mirage flight simulation. Computer-aided design (CAD) graphic of the shock waves created in the air by a flying Mirage 2000 jet fighter. The air is colour-coded to show its pressure, ranging from red (highest) through yellow, green, & light blue to dark blue (lowest). The shock waves cause drag & air turbulence, leading to higher fuel consumpt- ion, warming of the fuselage, metal fatigue & noise. It also makes military aircraft like this easier to detect. CAD can show the effect of design changes to an aircraft's aerodynamics. Image taken at the French National Institute for Research in Computer Science and Control (INRIA) facility in Roquencourt, near Paris, France.
