Caption: A crossing between the two beam pipes of the Intersecting Storage Rings (ISR) at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory outside Geneva. The ISR, which was the world's first proton-proton collider & which operated from 1971 to 1984, consisted of two interlaced beam pipes which crossed at 8 places. It accelerated the two beams of protons to an energy of 31. 5 GeV, giving a total collision energy of 63 GeV.
