Caption: Simulated evolution. Computer screen image of a program that makes stick-like animated cartoon- characters evolve. This program is used to design moving characters with lifelike gestures and indi- vidual personalities. The program assigns "genes" to an animated character and allows it to repro- duce with mutations. By selecting the best in each generation the user can make the character's move- ments gradually evolve into any desired style. The program is part of a project being carried out by researchers in the Media Lab at the USA's Mass- achusetts Institute of Technology. The Media Lab researches new ways that people might interact with the computer-driven media of the future.
