Caption: Virtual reality invisibility cloak. Diagram explaining the design of an "invisibility" virtual reality cloak developed by Professor Susumu Tachi of the University of Tokyo, Japan. The cloak is retro-reflective, designed to reflect a projected scene towards the observer. The real scenery (right) is recorded by a video camera, analysed by a computer, and projected using a half-mirror (left) onto the cloak (centre). The observer (far left) sees the scenery instead of the person wearing the cloak. The cloak is covered in special microballs that return incoming light in the exact direction from which it came. Photographed in May 2003, as part of the annual exhibition and conference on VR held in Laval, France. See image T490/313 for a demonstration of the system.
