Caption: Acoustics research. Researchers testing the acoustic properties of a model of a concert hall in an anechoic chamber. The anechoic chamber is designed to prevent any echoes from the walls, which are lined with sound-absorbent material. The acoustic properties of a concert hall are very important, as sounds from the stage must be able to reach the back of the hall unimpeded. Testing models saves the time and expense of finding a problem after the building has been built. These tests found the acoustics were imperfect, and the model was redesigned. This hall was to be built in Ankara, Turkey. Photographed at the Fraunhofer Institute for Physics in Construction, Germany.
