Caption: An early flight of the Russian Myasishchev M-17 high-altitude aircraft. This single-seat machine was designed primarily for map-making photography and for hail control. In the latter role, the aircraft 'seeds' thunderclouds with small crystals. This causes the cloud to release its rain or hail before it reaches crop areas where the hail could cause major damage. The Russian Committee for Environmental Control also claim that the M-17 could carry ozone generators to 'patch' holes in the ozone layer. The first flight of the M-17 was in 1990.
