Caption: Aeroplane graveyard. Satellite image of some of the many aeroplanes at the Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Centre (AMARC), Arizona, USA. The AMARC is where the US Air Force keeps its inactive aeroplanes until they are needed or broken up to provide spare parts (some dismantled aircraft are seen at lower right). Some of the aeroplanes are refitted as remotely-operated drones. Over 5000 aeroplanes are kept here. The AMARC is just outside Tucson, Arizona, in the Sonora Desert. Image taken by the Quickbird satellite, 11 August 2002.
