Meteorological research aircraft. This HIAPER (High-performance Instrumented Airborne Platform for Environmental Research) aircraft is used by the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) to study the atmosphere. It is equipped for collecting data at the tops of storms and lower edge of the stratosphere, which are altitudes out of reach of most research aircraft. HIAPER's range enables surveillance of remote ocean regions in a single flight to learn more about interactions between the oceans and atmosphere.
