Caption: Jet engine. Model of an aircraft's jet engine, with the casing cut away to show the internal components. Jet engines draw air into their compressor unit (at left). The blades in the compressor unit increase the pressure of the air before it enters combustion chambers (at centre, near the top and bottom of the casing). The air is then mixed with fuel and ignited. The hot exhaust gases pass through a turbine (at right); the turbine uses some of the exhaust gas' energy to power the compressor. The exhaust gas is then expanded at a high velocity through a nozzle to provide the thrust to propel the aircraft forward. Photograph of a Pratt & Whitney engine.
