Caption: Aircraft inspection. Technicians visually inspect a Boeing 737 transport aeroplane using a light pipe made of large optical fibres. Fibre optic fibres are made of flexible glass with a high refractive index. Light travels along the fibres from a light source and is used to illuminate inaccessible parts of the aircraft. Inspections are routinely carried out as aeroplanes get older.
