Caption: Concorde fuel tank liners. Technician holding two moulded panels that are used to line the fuel tanks of the supersonic airliner Concorde. Concorde planes were fitted with fuel tank liners following a crash in Paris in 2000 that was caused by debris rupturing a fuel tank. The liners are made of 'Kevlar' fibres in a matrix of fluoroelastomer rubber. Kevlar is the material used in bullet proof vests. It is exceptionally strong, but is also lightweight. As such, it is ideal for use on an aircraft, where weight must be kept to a minimum.
