Caption: Drone vision research. Researcher using a microscope (output seen on screen at left) to examine the compound eyes of a fly. This is being done to aid the design of an 'eye' for a drone in a similar way to that of a flying insect. This is part of work on the OSCAR system. OSCAR (optical scanning sensor for the control of autonomous robots) is a way for drones to 'see' their surroundings in a similar way to that of a flying insect. This work was carried out by the Biorobotics Research Group of the Movement and Perception Laboratory at the University of the Mediterranean, Marseille, France. The results were were published in 2003.
