Each cell has a lead metal negative electrode, a lead oxide positive electrode and an ion-carrying solution (electrolyte) between them of sulphuric acid. An electric current is generated as the electrodes chemically react with the acid. The battery can be recharged by applying a reverse current from the mains. Lead-acid batteries are cheap to make, but their power output runs down more quickly than some other types of battery. Photographed in Sacramento in California, USA, where people can recharge their batteries using solar power.
