Caption: Crash test dummies. These EuroSIDs (European side impact dummies) are modelled on the average man. They were designed to test safety in vehicle side impacts. Each has a metal and plastic skeleton covered by flesh-simulating foam and plastic, with a PVC skin. Their three ribs (bars in chest) are attached to a steel spine box by a piston, springs and a damper. EuroSIDs contain load cells to sense the motions and forces they experience during an impact. Photographed at part of First Technology Safety Systems in Delft in the Netherlands, which calibrates new dummies, and refurbishes and recalibrates old dummies for the European market.
