Caption: Electric car. Computer artwork of Reva, India's first electric car. It was launched in 2001 in Bangalore in southern India. The battery is located beneath the front seats. Side impact bars (orange) give extra protection to passengers in the event of a collision. A fully charged battery gives a driving range of 80 kilometres. The battery is also recharged during travel by regenerative braking. Electric cars may be increasingly important in the future as the world's oil reserves become depleted. In addition, electric cars do not pollute the environment with exhaust fumes, unlike conventional petrol- or diesel-fuelled vehicles.
