Fuel cell-powered sea canoe. This canoe is being powered by a fuel cell engine that was developed in 2000 by the Swiss engineer Professor Jean- Francois Affolter. He designed a series of boats to use these engines, the Hydroxy100 and the Hydroxy300. The fuel cell uses hydrogen as a fuel and oxygen as the oxidant. The slow, chemical burning of the hydrogen generates electricity, which can then be used to power the boat's propeller. Other than electricity, water is the only product of the reaction, so this technology is a clean source of power compared to the pollutant gases produced by petrol engines.
