Caption: High-speed train. Head-on view of the Swedish X2000 high-speed train negotiating a bend. The train is designed to tilt, or lean into, the bend. This allows faster cornering on existing track for two reasons. Firstly, the tilt pushes the centre of mass of the train toward the inside of the curve, making it more stable against cornering loads; secondly it provides better passenger comfort. The tilting mechanism means that the existing tracks do not have to be re-laid with a bank angle on corners, thus avoiding costly and disruptive long-term engineering works.
