Research submersible Nautile, underwater. This three-man mini-submarine can operate to a depth of 6 kilometres. It is titanium-hulled and carries enough oxygen to last five hours underwater. It is owned by the French research institute IFREMER, and is used for underwater surveys and collecting samples. It is equipped with cameras, lights and robotic arms (lower right). The main propeller is at the rear (far left), but the submarine has four motors that enable it to move easily in any direction. A robot probe 'Robin' can detach and be directed by remote control. Nautile is best known for diving to the wreck of the Titanic in the Atlantic. Photographed in the Mediterranean Sea.
