Caption: Ocean technology. Image 2 of 4. Scuba diver next to a section of pipe being lowered into the sea from a boat. The bottom of the pipe will be attached to a base (not seen) fitted around a fresh water spring on the seabed. The pipe will direct the flow of fresh water to the surface where it will be made available to passing boats and may eventually be pumped to the mainland. The fresh water source is at a depth of 36 metres below the surface, and is about 800 metres offshore on the Franco-Italian border in the Mediterranean Sea. The spring is fed from the Alps. See T700/112-115 for a sequence of the pipe's construction. Photographed in 2003.
