Caption: Robot submarine ALIVE (Autonomous Light Intervention Vehicle) underwater. This remotely operated vehicle (ROV) is designed for inspection and maintenance of deep or hazardously placed objects. It has no physical link with the surface, instead being controlled by a two-way acoustic link. It is powered and controlled by five motors; one vertical and two each in the horizontal and forward-backward directions. It can dive to a depth of around three kilometres, way beyond the reach of a human diver. It is a joint project between Cybernetix and Ifremer of France, HitecVision of Norway and the Joint Research Centre at Ispra, Italy.
