Caption: MODEL RELEASED. Diving research. Divers inside a pressure chamber with monitoring equipment during research into breathing mixtures for diving. Inert gases, like hydrogen and helium, are used, instead of the nitrogen in air, to help counteract the effects of diving at the great pressures found at large depths. These pressures force lots of gas into body tissues and can poison the diver and upset body physiology, such as during nitrogen narcosis. Hydrogen and helium avoid some of these effects but cause other effects. This is the Comex Hydra-Ludion project (1998-1999) that combined the use of hydrogen and helium at different times in a dive. Extended dives at 300 metres were possible.
