Caption: Diver plotting on a map to establish the position of his boat relative to Ferdinandea. Ferdinandea is a submerged volcanic seamount located about 30 kilometres south of Sicily. The purpose of the dive is to record activity at its crater. This region is the most volcanically active in Europe because of its proximity to the border between the Eurasian and African plates. Research has suggested that the volcano may erupt again soon, which would cause it to emerge above sea level.
