Caption: Wind tunnel calibration. Researcher using a laser (green light) to measure and calibrate wind speeds in a wind tunnel. The wind, generated in the large cylindrical section (at left), passes through a transparent box (far end of wind tunnel) where a small aircraft model is placed. The laser (created and transmitted by the equipment at centre right) is reflected off a mirror below the box. The speed of the air flow is calculated by detecting light scattered from the laser off dust in the air. The results from the small models used are scaled up (extrapolated) to replicate flight conditions. The wind tunnel seen here is part of CIRA, the Italian aerospace research centre in Padua, Italy. CIRA was founded in 1984.
