Caption: Plasma vapour deposition. Plasma torch being used to coat a component by plasma vapour deposition (PVD). PVD introduces alloying elements into the very top layer of the metal. The plasma is a hot stream of ions of the alloying metals needed, and is directed toward the component by an electric field. Here the coating is Cristome, a quasi- crystalline alloy of aluminium and manganese. Cristome has a high resistance to heat and has a low coefficient of friction. Objects coated in it are non-stick, non-scratch and do not allow the formation of hot spots as they dissipate heat evenly though the surface.
