Caption: MIG welding. An engineer using a MIG welding torch to manufacture an exhaust for a racing car. MIG welding (Metal Inert Gas) is a type of electric arc welding. The arc is struck between an electrode and the piece being welded. In MIG welding, the electrode and arc are surrounded by a stream of inert gas, usually argon. This prevents oxidation of the molten metal of the joint as it is made. At right, the engineer is holding a welding rod. This is a compressed mixture of metal powder to add mass to the weld, and a flux which ensures complete mixing of the metals. Photographed at Renault Sport, France.
